LED Lights

One of the features of the house is the use of LED lights throughout inside the house with selected LED's on the outside.

All of the lights are from Lighting Direct, Thorndon Quay branch.

WHY LED:
The sustainability of LED lamps offers unique peace of mind. LED lights are friendly to the environment without compromise on performance. They save energy costs from the moment you switch to LED and with our desire to minimise our power requirements they are an essential part of our sustainable home. Most LED's have a lifespan of up to 25 years and energy savings of up to 80%. In fact, with their energy savings, these lights can pay for themselves in as little as 18 months! LED's are environmentally friendly, and provide great comfort because they are free of glare, heat and UV emission, and mercury.

We are using two ranges of LED in the house, the majority of the lights are the LEDLUX  range  www.ledlux.ee

with the balance from the Halcyon range  http://www.halcyonlights.co.nz/ProductsList.aspx?reqcategory=10

I have calculated that the total power usage in the home will be less than 500W if all of the lights are on at the same time, compared with a standard home which would be around 4000W. As a result the photo-voltaic solar panels, being installed and connected to Meridian Energy, which will provide 2.07kW per hour will come close to providing the whole houses electric requirements. More about the photo-voltaic system later.

Another great benefit of LED's is that they run as virtually cold, and hence can have insulation across them increasing the thermal seal of the whole house.
